Biography
Macharia Kaguru is a Partner at Njaga & Co. Advocates, one of the leading law firms in Kenya. He is an accomplished legal expert with extensive experience in corporate and commercial law, finance, and intellectual property law.
Macharia holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL. B) First Class Honours degree from the University of Nairobi, a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree in Capital Markets & Securities Regulation, International Commercial Arbitration Law from the University of Nairobi, and a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree in Corporate Commercial, Securities Regulation and Climate Change from Harvard Law School. He is a member of the Law Society of Kenya and a Patent Agent.
Before joining Njaga & Co. Advocates, Macharia worked as an associate at Dentons Law, a top Ivy League law firm in New York. He specialized in corporate and finance law and intellectual property. He advised clients on various corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and capital market transactions. He also advised clients on financial regulatory compliance and securities law matters.
Macharia is also a seasoned legal educator and has been a lecturer at Strathmore University’s School of Law since 2017. He teaches various courses, including corporate and commercial law, finance law, and intellectual property law. He is also a visiting lecturer at the University of Nairobi’s School of Law, where he teaches corporate finance law.
Macharia is a published author and has written several articles on corporate and finance law, which have been published in various legal journals and publications. He has also been a speaker at various legal conferences and seminars, where he has shared his legal expertise on various topics.
In 2024, Macharia expanded his professional scope by joining the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as an Environmental Law & Policy Specialist. In this role, he provides strategic environmental law and policy advice to the Office of the Director, UNEP Law Division, on Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), climate change law, environmental rule of law, and emerging environmental law and policy issues. His key responsibilities include:
- Advising countries on the operationalization of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, particularly concerning carbon market frameworks, laws, and policies, including voluntary carbon markets, bilateral and multilateral carbon mitigation outcomes exchanges, UNFCC centralized mechanisms, and non-market approaches.
- Preparing and assisting in research and drafting peer-reviewed publications for the Division.
- Developing Chemical REACH model guidance for UNEP Member States.
- Preparing guidance on environmental rights, nature rights, and future rights.
In his role as a Partner at Njaga & Co. Advocates, Macharia advises local and international clients on complex legal matters, including corporate transactions, financing transactions, intellectual property law matters, and regulatory compliance matters. He is known for his attention to detail, commercial acumen, and client-focused approach.
